Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some quick answers to common questions about Plymouth Walking Tours, so you know exactly what to expect before you book.
Where do we meet?
Our most popular tour, Plymouth: Harbour to Hoe, starts opposite the Mayflower Steps. This is on the Barbican, near the Tourist Information Centre. Just look for the large blue flag with a seagull on it! Your guide will be wearing a branded top or lanyard.
Our Royal WIlliam Yard: A Maritime Masterpiece starts outside the main gates of the Royal William Yard. Your guide will be wearing a branded top.
How difficult are the walks? Do I need to be very fit?
Our walks have some slopes and steps in them, but you don’t need to be an athlete to join us! The Plymouth: Harbour to Hoe tour has one longer uphill slope. The Royal William Yard: A Martime Masterpiece has some long sets of steps. If you have limited mobility, or need regular breaks, please let us know and we will make adjustments to the route. You can also request a separate tour which may suit you better.
What should I wear and bring on the tour?
Just wear your normal clothes! The Hoe can get quite windy, so we suggest an extra layer. If it’s looking a bit drizzly, we suggest a raincoat, as umbrellas tend to get blown inside out.
You can bring anything you need on the tour. Feel free to grab a coffee or snack before the tour to enjoy on the walk. If you have any large bags with you, the Tourist Information Centre offers bag storage.
Are the tours accessible?
We are proud that we make our tours as accessible as possible. Our tours can be adjusted to make them suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs. We also welcome partially sighted visitors and those with deafness.
We offer a separate audio described tour for visually impaired and blind visitors. Please contact us for more information.
What happens if it rains?
We will cancel a tour in heavy rain or severe wind, but we don’t cancel for light rain. But, we know some people might prefer not to walk in the rain at all.
We offer full refunds if it’s raining and you decide the weather is too much for you. Please get in contact as soon as possible in this case.
Can children join the tour?
Yes! We find that the content of our tours is most suited to children aged 9 and up, but we have resources to keep children (and adults!) engaged, including binoculars and historic smells.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes! Friendly, well-behaved dogs are welcome on our tours, but please be mindful of other people on the tour. The Hoe is popular with dog walkers, so your dog may make some friends during that part of the tour!
We love to know if you’re bringing a dog, so please send us a message in advance.
Are there toilets on the route?
There are public toilets on the routes of our tours, but we don’t schedule toilet breaks, so ask that you use facilities before joining us. If you do need the toilet on a tour, please let your guide know as soon as possible and they will arrange a quick stop.
I can’t find the date, time or area I was hoping for
If you can’t find a scheduled tour when you were hoping, please get in contact! If we can, we’ll add a public tour that suits you. A lot of our tours dates and times are chosen randomly, so please don’t hesitate!
Do you offer bespoke tours?
If you would like a tour of a different area of Plymouth, or of a specific theme, we offer bespoke tours at reasonable prices. Please send us a message and we’ll do our best to help.
