Plymouth: Harbour to Hoe

Our most popular tour! Stroll from the historic Barbican and bustling Sutton Harbour up to the iconic Hoe, stopping by the edge of the city centre on the way.

A typical tour will pass the following sights:

  • Mayflower Steps
  • Elizabethan House
  • Southside Street and Gin Distillery
  • Merchants House
  • Plymouth Synagogue
  • St Andrew’s Church and Guildhall
  • City Centre and Civic Centre
  • Hoe Park
  • Smeaton’s Tower
  • Royal Citadel

The tour starts opposite the Mayflower Steps just by the Tourist Information Centre. There are pay toilets one minute from the start point. There are lots of restaurants, bars and cafes for refreshments, including a takeaway coffee cart just next to the start point. There are several car parks and on-street parking in the area, but parking is expensive. The start point is just a 10 minute walk from Royal Parade, the main bus hub in Plymouth’s City Centre, or the Plymouth City Bus 25 can drop you right next to the Mayflower Steps. The Mount Batten and Royal William Yard ferries dock just 3 minutes away.

Royal William Yard: A Maritime Masterpiece

New for 2026! Discover the Royal William Yard’s grand Georgian architecture, waterfront vistas, and rich naval history as you take a gentle walk around the restored victualling yard. The tour starts outside the main entrance to the yard, taking a winding route past main buildings and hidden corners before heading to the views from Devil’s Point park. Learn about the past, present and future of this amazing destination.

There are free toilets in the Brewhouse building (Arcade shopping) within the Royal William Yard, or on the way to the site on the corner of Cremyll Street and Admiral’s Hard. There are several eateries and coffee shops inside and just outside the Yard. There is a car park on Cremyll Street, or in the Royal William Yard. Please follow the parking guidance carefully! The Royal William Yard ferry is a direct link from the Barbican, and is operated by Plymouth Boat Trips. There are bus stop just outside the Yard, but there is no direct bus route from the Barbican or Hoe to the Royal William Yard.
